On Saturday 11 November 2017, a party of volunteers set about planting 1,000, yes 1,000, bluebells on the embankment on Harpers Road.

The bulbs were ENGLISH Bluebells, which apparently are dying out and need some help.

LRA planted 500 of these bulbs last year but, as yet, none have shown through.  Let’s hope they take as a “carpet in a Bluebell Wood” is one of those wonderful sights and it would be great to see them on the Embankment.

As you know, LRA recently received its second award at the North West in Bloom competition.  The idea to plant the English Bluebells came from the judge who assessed LRA’s efforts.  Following up on the idea can’t do our chances any harm for next year, but the real reason is that the Bluebells should bring a lovely splash of colour to the Embankment and give us all a lot of pleasure.

It was hard work for the volunteers because the ground was so hard and the bulbs are so small!

LRA is always on the look out for any volunteer help in the work of keeping Longbarn’s green, shared spaces in tip top condition.  So if you feel like giving up and hour or so, please contact one of the Committee or drop a note using the “Contact Us” tab here on the website.
